Frequently Asked Questions

In June 2021, The BOMA Project received a $10 million investment from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. This gift will have a major impact on BOMA’s ability to expand and accelerate our work across Africa to reach millions more women, children, youth, and refugees — but it is ongoing support from investors like yourself that will really make this goal a reality.

Here are a few answers to your most-asked questions about BOMA’s path to lifting millions out of extreme poverty. If you don’t see your question here, we’d love to hear from you at info@boma.ngo!

“Over 700 million people globally still live in extreme poverty. To find solutions, we all benefit from on-the-ground insights and diverse engagement, so we prioritized organizations with local teams, leaders of color, and a specific focus on empowering women and girls.”

Does BOMA still need my support?

Yes! This investment from MacKenzie Scott is an incredible start in reaching our goal to impact millions, but there is still a long path ahead of us.

The drylands of Africa are home to more than 420 million people, and also the epicenter of some of the highest poverty rates, chronic hunger, and gender inequality in the world. The region has been heavily impacted by climate change in recent decades, with increasingly volatile cycles of drought and flooding. Furthermore, the pandemic has pushed millions more into extreme poverty creating an urgent need for sustainable solutions.

MacKenzie Scott’s generous and transformative investment puts BOMA on a path to accelerated impact. While it helps build a strong foundation for BOMA’s drive toward our ambitious goal to impact millions, the need for additional resources and funding to support BOMA’s work not only remains but increases significantly.

How and why was BOMA chosen by MacKenzie Scott?

BOMA went through a lengthy and intense due diligence for this investment, and Ms. Scott highlights in her announcement that she chose “high-impact organizations in categories and communities that have been historically underfunded and overlooked.”

“Over 700 million people globally still live in extreme poverty,” she wrote. “To find solutions, we all benefit from on-the-ground insights and diverse engagement, so we prioritized organizations with local teams, leaders of color, and a specific focus on empowering women and girls.”

How will this investment impact BOMA's plans?

With this unrestricted funding, we can invest in building the capacity of our organization and our people, fund more program innovation, expand to new countries and populations in need, and triple our effort to reach 3 million people by 2025. This audacious goal means BOMA will need to raise more than $72 million between now and 2025.
