Mentor LIFT NK- Turkana

BOMA is currently seeking qualified candidates for mentor position for the newly awarded Livelihoods and Inclusion for Transformation (LIFT) Northern Kenya project. The Livelihoods and Inclusion for Transformation (LIFT) Northern Kenya project will implement a climate crisis-adapted “green” version of The BOMA Project’s proven poverty graduation model, the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) to provide market-based pull by facilitating more competitive, profitable Green Enterprises for women, youth, and refugees within the forest ecosystems in Marsabit, Samburu and Turkana counties and in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Refugee Settlements over a period of 3 years. BOMA will be the Lead partner of the project and will collaborate with Danish Church Aid (DCA) and Smart Regional Consultants (SRC) in implementing the project.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the LIFT Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), that will help participants start businesses to uplift their living standards and ensure environmental conservation.
  • Provide mentoring to the agreed number of small business enterprises under the REAP – LIFT Programme.
  • In a collaborative process with the community and BOMA Location Committees, target and identify eligible women for the REAP – LIFT Programme, based on BOMA’s criteria – (using the Participatory Wealth Ranking and Participatory Rural Appraisal Tools)
  • Meet with established Business Groups (BGs) as required, help them make decisions about their business and provide mentorship and guidance as needed.
  • Conduct/deliver business and savings skills trainings including financial management to the businesses in the designated locations and surrounding manyattas.
  • Train and mentor, the Business Groups, green entrepreneurship, climate change adaptation, climate-smart technologies.
  • Support the mentors to ensure entrepreneurs succeed in production, trade, and value addition based on the green enterprises.
  • Perform a minimum of agreed visits per week to the business groups and savings groups for which you are responsible.
  • Collect data and information for individuals, business group performance, participation of BG members in savings groups, savings group performance, participants living standards, participation in climate change adaptations, and other relevant information.
  • Upload quality data and information on groups performance using the BOMA taroworks system (information management technology) as required.
  • Report on the businesses and savings groups’ performances to the Field Officer.
  • Represent BOMA in the designated location, including as a representative for the organization in local development committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least a Diploma in community development, social work or another related discipline.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in similar work.
  • Proven experience in data collection and or mentorship is an added advantage.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills; candidates should be able to relate well to both the women with whom we work, and the BOMA Field Officer.
  • Be self-driven, and able to work with minimal staff supervision.
  • Must be a native of the respective location you are applying for with working knowledge of English, Swahili and the local language.
  • Strongly encouraged – Have a valid motorcycle license and experience on how to ride a motorcycle or (at least willingness to present a motorcycle license within the first 3 months of employment).

Mentor, SEED - Isiolo

To address the brewing youth unemployment crisis and youth radicalization challenges in many parts of Northern Kenya, BOMA is partnering with Smart Regional Consultants (SRC) to launch a youth-focused adaptation of REAP. The Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (SEED) for Vulnerable and Marginalized Youth in Northern Kenya, which will be launched in Isiolo and Marsabit Counties, will leverage BOMA’s extensive experience and established community partnerships within the region while helping pastoralist youth acquire the necessary skills and resources to build sustainable livelihoods and lift themselves and their families out of extreme poverty.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), BOMA’s program that helps low-income youth start businesses to uplift their living standards
  • Provide mentoring to the agreed number of small business enterprises.
  • In a collaborative process with the community (Participatory Rural Appraisal) and BOMA Location Committees, target and identify eligible youth for the program, based on BOMA’s criteria.
  • Meet with established business groups, help them make decisions about their business and offer other guidance as needed.
  • Conduct/deliver business and savings skills trainings and mentor (provide guidance and support) to the businesses in the designated location and surrounding manyattas
  • Survey individuals and collect data on living standards, participation in savings groups, and other relevant information.
  • Represent BOMA in the designated location, including as a representative for the organization in local development committees.
  • Report on the businesses and savings groups’ performances to the Field Officer.
  • Perform a minimum of agreed visits per week to the business groups and savings groups for which you are responsible and upload all data collected at a minimum rate of once a month.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least a Diploma in Community Development, Social Work or another related discipline.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience managing livelihood and community development projects, specifically with a youth entrepreneurship component. Proven experience in data collection is an added advantage.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills; candidates should be able to relate well to both the women with whom we work, and the BOMA Field Officer.
  • Be self-driven, and able to work with minimal staff supervision
  • Must be a native of the respective ward you are applying for with working knowledge of English, Swahili and the local language.
  • Have a valid motorcycle license (Class A1/A2) and has experience on how to ride a motorcycle

Cluster Office Administrator

BOMA is a Kenyan NGO that was started in the drylands of Kenya and continues to provide tailored poverty alleviation programming across Northern Kenya.  BOMA is working to lift 3 million people out of extreme poverty by 2027. The Office Administrator in the Cluster Office is responsible for supporting the Administration and People Function within BOMA’s programmes and operations. The holder of the position is also in charge of all procurement matters within the Cluster Office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Administration Responsibilities
      • Responsible for the safety, look and feel of the office including office maintenance/repairs.
      • Manages all office supplies and stationery at the Cluster Office.
      • Manages all front office services at the Cluster Office.
      • Assign/allocate office sitting and working spaces to staff at Cluster Office.
      • Responsible for allocation of vehicles to program teams for field travel and follow ups.
      • Manages all logistics for the programs including drivers’ schedules, vehicle repairs and services
      • Maintain car fuel logs, maintenance and service schedules for all vehicles and motorbikes for the Cluster Office.
      • Responsible for ensuring that BOMA cars allocated at the Cluster Office are parked by stipulated time.
      • Ensure safety and security of BOMA assets in the Cluster Office and the field.
      • Manages and controls petty cash at the Cluster Office.
      • Responsible for cash reconciliation and replenishment at the Cluster Office.
      • Support budgeting procedures at the Cluster office level.
      • Organize travel arrangements for staff within the Cluster office and visiting teams by making necessary bookings.
      • Receive and review payment documents submitted at the Cluster office for transmission to Head Office for payment.
    • Procurement Responsibilities
      • Responsible for procurement matters within the assigned office cluster collaborating closely with the Procurement and Logistics Manager
      • Maintain supplier’s database, contracts, contacts at the Cluster Office Level
      • Assist the Head Office procurement team during prequalification of service providers.
      • Occasionally review procurement opportunities available at the Cluster level and advice the Procurement and Logistics Manager to ensure value for money.
      • Assist in compiling bid analysis for the procurement committee.
      • Responsible for submission of procurement documents for payment from the Cluster Office.
      • Maintain records and file Requisition and Local Purchase Order.

    • People (HR) Responsibilities
      • Responsible for regularly processing of leave applications and updating the leave register for your Cluster office and forwarding the same to the People and Culture Manager for filing
      • Receives documentation for new staff/joiners in your Cluster office and ensure it is processed within the set timelines. The same documentation to be sent to the People Operations Assistant.
      • Ensure the new staff in your office are onboarded properly by ensuring the staff are properly set up in terms of work tools, e-mails etc.
      • Maintaining and updating employee records on soft copies for the staff in your cluster office while maintaining an accurate and updated employee register.
      • Support in conducting exit interviews when called upon and assist in managing the exit process/offboarding including employee clearance.
      • Assists in the overall recruitment process as guided by the People Operations Coordinator e.g. contacting candidates when recruiting staff at the Cluster office.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in International Development, Business Administration/Management or a related field required from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum at least three (3) years in administration experience in a busy organization in Northern Kenya preferably Marsabit.
  • Excellence interpersonal, oral and written communication and negotiation skills, including expert command of English grammar and AP style.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, remote conferencing applications.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee and coordinate implementation of programme activities by Mentors including grant distributions, trainings, with support from the Program Manager.
  • Target and identify eligible households for the REAP – LIFT Programme through Participatory methodologies and adapted participants targeting tools (including sustainable business screening and guideline) based on the set criteria.
  • Orient Locational Committees members in the REAP – LIFT Programme locations andcollaborate with them on targeting and implementation.
  • Facilitate formation of the business groups and support community-based market assessments/or boot camps activities during business idea generation and incubation process to help the program participants identify viable and feasible green /environmental neutral businesses opportunities to run.
  • Support market linkages by collaborating with the Markets and Linkages Officer, including value chain development for REAP – LIFT Programme businesses, the registration of savings groups with social services and linking REAP – LIFT businesses to markets, financial institutions, among others.
  • Facilitate business groups to form savings associations that meet monthly to deposit savings which will enable members and village residents access credit for long term business growth.
  • Train women on various business skills, green entrepreneurship, climate change adaptation and climate-smart technologies.
  • Assist in the overall recruitment process as guided by the People Department for mentor positions.
  • Assist in conducting new staff onboarding, working closely with the People Department and various departmental heads/representatives.
  • Assists the People Department and Training Department in identifying training needs of mentors who are his/her direct reportees.
  • Support in conducting exit interviews when called upon and assist in managing the exit process/offboarding including employee clearance for respective mentors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree or Diploma in Community Development, Social Sciences, Business Management, Project Management or any other relevant field from a recognized institution
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience for Degree holders and at least 5 years of relevant experience (in a similar role in the Northern Kenya) for the Diploma holders.
  • Demonstrable ability to coordinate field activities.
  • Excellent people management skills.
  • Proven competency/experience in data collection and basic analysis.
  • Possession of self-drive; able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Good report writing and computer skills.
  • Fluent in English, Kiswahili, and the local dialects of the Counties of support.
