Program Coordinator NRM - LIFT Northern Kenya – Turkana

The NRM Coordinator will lead the implementation and provide technical guidance on natural resource management approaches and tools, including technical backstopping NRM related to drylands agriculture; sustainable rangeland management; sustainable forest management; non-timber forest product harvesting; reforestation; and climate change adaptation and mitigation within the Green REAP project locations. The Natural Resource Management Coordinator will be responsible for driving performance and results to achieve program objectives, in line with donor expectations. He/she will lead the team to deliver quality and timely implementation within scope and on budget. monitor activities implementations, oversee program budgets, deliver quality reports and ensure excellence in all BOMA’s activities.

He/she will work closely with county government Department of Environment, Natural Resources, Climate Change and Energy as well as agencies such as the Kenya Forest Services, NEMA, Community Forest Associations in implementing Natural Resource Management (NRM) and restoration interventions across the project areas.

The Livelihoods and Inclusion for Transformation (LIFT) Northern Kenya will implement a crisis – adapted green version of the BOMA’s proven poverty graduation model the rural entrepreneur access project (REAP) over a three year period in Turkana, Marsabit and Samburu counties helping 10,950 households to establish businesses and graduate out of extreme poverty; protect, restore and plan for long term sustainable management of four sensitive ecosystems and strengthen political and social enabling environment for refugee livelihoods and social inclusion, green enterprises and sustainable natural resource management.

  1. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in International Development, Economics, Business, Development , Natural Resource Management, Environmental studies and Climate change or a related field required from a recognized institution. Master’s degree in a relevant field desired.
    • Minimum 5 years coordinating livelihood and community development projects, or/and women sociolect-economic empowerment projects. Knowledge of Poverty Graduation Approaches an added advantage.
    • Excellence interpersonal, oral and written communication and negotiation skills, including expert command of English grammar and AP style.
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
    • Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, remote conferencing applications. Salesforce experience is a plus.
    • Experience within the region and understanding of local dynamics highly preferred.
    • Strong analytical and report writing skills.

SEED Mentor

To address the brewing youth unemployment crisis and youth radicalization challenges in many parts of Northern Kenya, BOMA is partnering with Smart Regional Consultants (SRC) to launch a youth-focused adaptation of REAP. The Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (SEED) for Vulnerable and Marginalized Youth in Northern Kenya, which will be launched in Isiolo and Marsabit Counties, will leverage BOMA’s extensive experience and established community partnerships within the region while helping pastoralist youth acquire the necessary skills and resources to build sustainable livelihoods and lift themselves and their families out of extreme poverty.

  1. Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Manage the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), BOMA’s program that helps low-income youth start businesses to uplift their living standards
    • Provide mentoring to the agreed number of small business enterprises.
    • In a collaborative process with the community (Participatory Rural Appraisal) and BOMA Location Committees, target and identify eligible youth for the program, based on BOMA’s criteria.
    • Meet with established business groups, help them make decisions about their business and offer other guidance as needed.
    • Conduct/deliver business and savings skills trainings and mentor (provide guidance and support) to the businesses in the designated location and surrounding manyattas
    • Survey individuals and collect data on living standards, participation in savings groups, and other relevant information.
    • Represent BOMA in the designated location, including as a representative for the organization in local development committees.
    • Report on the businesses and savings groups’ performances to the Field Officer.
    • Perform a minimum of agreed visits per week to the business groups and savings groups for which you are responsible and upload all data collected at a minimum rate of once a month.
  1. QUALIFICATIONS
    • At least a Diploma in Community Development, Social Work or another related discipline.
    • Minimum one (1) year experience managing livelihood and community development projects, specifically with a youth entrepreneurship component. Proven experience in data collection is an added advantage.
    • Possess excellent interpersonal skills; candidates should be able to relate well to both the women with whom we work, and the BOMA Field Officer.
    • Be self-driven, and able to work with minimal staff supervision
    • Must be a native of the respective ward you are applying for with working knowledge of English, Swahili and the local language.
    • Have a valid motorcycle license and has experience on how to ride a motorcycle

Monitoring & Evaluation Officer (REAP for Climate Resilience)

The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer is a key position for partner and project staff capacity building, data quality assurance, accountability, documentation, and learning. The position holder will provide support to The BOMA Project (BOMA) team and its partners in design, planning, and execution of monitoring and evaluation activities and the deployment and use of technology tools to ensure quality implementation of programs in accordance with accepted standards, providing essential feedback for learning, accountability and data decision making.

The M&E Officer will be responsible for providing input on Product Portfolio specific M&E system design and adaptation, defining, and designing technology tools that support the portfolio specific design, portfolio specific capacity building for partner staff on technology and tools, and monitoring and evaluation processes for accountability and program execution integrity, and capturing learning in line with project and organizational learning agendas. Under the overall leadership and direction of BOMA M&E Manager, and in close collaboration with the Technical Team and partner staff. The position holder will champion, rigorous measurement of product and project activities and outcomes through data and analytics and development of team capacity in monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and learning that is adapted to the product and ensuring effective field-level ownership of activities and data enabled decision making.

  1. QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Arts/Science required in Information systems, Business Information Technology statistics, public health, development economics, international development, sociology, business/project management, or similar.
  • Professional working proficiency in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft desktop technologies, Salesforce, Data analytics and visualization tools and technologies such as Microsoft Power BI, STATA, and digital data collection. Proficiency and interest in data analytics programming languages (Python, SQL, R, JavaScript) will be a definite advantage.
  • Superior skills in data analysis, critical thinking, and report writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in proactive, results-oriented relationship management and capacity building with partners.
